About Me

My name is Joseph Wragg

  • Currently at Oxford University reading Ancient and Modern History with a Choral Scholarship

  • Harrow School with a Music Scholarship and Bursary

  • Arnold House School with a Music Scholarship and Bursary

I began my education at two state schools in Central London and subsequently at 9 received a bursary and music scholarship to study at Arnold House School, one of the top boys’ prep schools in London. Arnold House prepared me very well for senior school, as I also received a bursary and music scholarship to Harrow School, arguably the best boys’ boarding school in the world. Looking back, Harrow taught me not only the importance of learning but also allowed me to pursue my passions for History, Music and English as well as allowing me the time to excel in public speaking, charity work and sport. I am now starting the next phase of my education at Oxford University reading Ancient and Modern History with a Choral Scholarship at Magdalen College.

My Tutoring Experience

  •  I have tutored children from ages 7-17 in English, History, Music and RS

  • I have successfully led many types of musical and academic groups and teams, allowing me to greater improve my people skills and empathy

Whilst at Harrow School, I was given the brilliant opportunity of working with many young children through the school charity Shaftesbury Enterprise. Teaching English, History, Music and Religious Studies to many children at local primary and secondary schools from ages 7-17, I gained great experience of how to make learning useful and rewarding - there is no point teaching someone anything if they do not enjoy it! I have also had numerous experiences of leading, rehearsing and conducting musical and choral ensembles ranging from 3 to 30 members which has greatly improved my leadership skills. Through my numerous tutoring experiences, I have seen that working with young people is extremely rewarding and pleasurable.

My Way of Teaching

It is important to teach every child in the right way and because every child responds differently to challenges a tutor must be prepared to adapt and change. In addition, every child must receive the right amount of attention to ensure that they are both confident and prepared to work independently. Each child will inevitably work in different ways, however I believe that because I am young and committed I can be the right tutor for any child willing to make progress.

My Interests and Passions

My chief passions lie in History and Music. History links with so many other academic fields such as Literature, Economics, Art, Anthropology, Classics and Music so the subject supplies me with a wide range of interests. The main periods that I specialise in are Classical Greece, Imperial Rome, Medieval England, Renaissance Europe, the ascendancy of the Ottoman Empire, the Thirty Years’ War, the French Revolution and the World Wars. Alongside my Historical studies, I have more recently developed an interest in Politics, International Relations, Military History and History of Art.

Music is my other central interest. Having played the Violin since the age of 5, I now am diploma level in Violin, Viola and Singing and a developing composer.

I also enjoy British Comedy (particularly Monty Python), the works of J.R.R. Tolkien and military strategy games. After University I am interested in joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office or the Ministry of Defence and having a career in the Civil Service or Politics.

I live in East Sussex but during term time I am based in Oxford and London.
